Strategy: Before you buy anything online- from clothing to computers, google for a coupon code. It's this simple- shopping at Kohl's? Google 'Kohl's coupons'. Shopping for a Dell computer? Google: 'Dell coupons'. My husband did this before a large purchase at Dell for a laptop. He found a 40% off coupon. Not exaggerating. They are out there. Just go look for them. Full price is always negotiable. There is always a salesman trying to push the sale, so only pay the lowest price. Not full retail.

Budget Software and Garage Sale Hunting

Katy asked me last week in the comments section- what budget software do I recommend? We actually use Quicken which is compatible with a MAC or a PC. We do not budget in the sense of getting cash out for each category. We have found that being careful at the grocery store and otherwise helps us to stay within a given budget. Some people need the visual and use the cash- that is awesome. For anyone struggling with debt- school loans, credit cards or the like I would highly recommend Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. If you have a success story that you would like to share, please leave it in the comments section.

I worked our church garage sale this weekend, and found a lot of great cheap finds. At the top of the list were- a cute silk shirt for myself- $2. A 2-in-1 grocery cart/highchair cover for infants - $4- never been used. A Gap backpack for my daughter for preschool- $1. A Spiderman costume for Halloween- $3. Lots of great quality clothing for the kids - $1 a piece. I only buy stuff that is in immaculate condition and try to get the name brand stuff. My favorite travel item

Since we are currently traveling, I thought it would be appropriate to share my favorite toddler travel item- the One Step Ahead Tuck-Me-In Travel Bed. It comes with its own air pump and it has sides so your little one doesn't roll off in the middle of the night. We have two and we LOVE them. Even our older boys- 4 and 5-can still use them. It is a great transition when they are too big for the Pack N' Play and too small for a bed. $79.95 is pretty steep, so go check out the lookalike on Amazon for only $47.99 with free super saver shipping. Well worth the investment if you travel a lot with young ones. The sale on Amazon only lasts through the end of Sunday.

Strategy Two: Big Ticket Items

It has been a light week for two reasons- I have been traveling and there have not been any amazing deals out there. It's kind of disappointing, really. But Father's Day is around the corner and that means there will be more. Anyway, I digress. Today I am going to discuss strategy when buying big ticket items- namely houses and cars. I am not an expert, but this is what I've learned.

Do your research
If you are house shopping, look at other houses on the market on Realtor.com that are in the neighborhood. Calculate price per square foot and apply that to a house you may be looking at. If you are shopping for a car, get on Kelley Blue Book, and know the exact value that you should be spending on that particular model. My husband and I bought a used minivan three years ago, and the first thing we did was get the amount we should be paying off of Kelley Blue Book. We used it as leverage, and then knocked an extra amount off of our offer- because the lady was desperate to sell. She was moving to Korea in six weeks. Which leads me to the next point...

Don't be desperate to buy, find someone desperate to sell
Appearing desperate to buy is the fastest way to get overcharged. Not only are you not giving yourself ample time to research, you are giving the salesperson all the leverage. Catch the car salesman on a day he's trying to reach a quota. Find a house where the family is being forced to move quickly. Find a lady who needs to sell her car because she's moving to Korea. Clarification: This is not taking advantage of the person. Always be fair with your offers and keep the other person's needs in mind. But the person who needs to move sometime within the next year and the person who needs to move in the next month are going to be very different in their approach to sell.

Eliminate the middleman
My husband's parents recently accepted a contract on their house- from our friends. Just because I sent out an e-mail BEFORE they listed the house. They eliminated Realtor costs and both families are happy. We did the same thing one year ago when we bought our house. When we bought our minivan, we paid a whole lot less than we would have at a dealership. It may take more time, but if you use sites such as Craiglist and TAMU for sale you can find exactly what you need at a much lower price.

TIP for BCS: If you are selling and have had no luck with listing your car, try Lock and Roll. You can park your car at Lock and Roll on Hwy 6 and Harvey for about $120 for three months- those were the prices a couple years back. People come by and look at the cars there. Carmax offered us one amount for our used Tahoe and we parked it at Lock and Roll, found a buyer and got $3000 more. It really is worth it to eliminate the middleman.

My husband tells me that people typically grill on Memorial Day. And I told him that painfully frugal people cook whatever is left in their pantry from last week. Despite our differences about Memorial Day dinner, he deserves a really nice Father's Day card.

I was just admiring the 5 by 7 Father's Day cards in the brochure Shutterfly sent me yesterday. Then I discovered that they are letting you print one for free using code CARD40 between now and June 10th. That makes them all the more admirable. You can also use code SHIP50 to ship any order for free. I don't believe that Shutterfly let's you stack these codes, so they need to be used for separate orders.

2009 Coupon Book

Every year the soccer club calls us to see if we want their coupon book. $39.95 for $6000 worth of coupons. The question is- which of those coupons have value to us and will actually get used? The first 3 years, Sterling Auto offered a free oil change which almost paid for the book itself, but last year they pulled it- so take a look at what they offer now:

Retstaurants: Buy one get one free entrees- Applebee's, Gattitown, Pyro, Honey Baked Ham, Los Nortenos, La Bodega... the list goes on. The thing is most families have their favorite restaurants and stick to them, so you would need to make sure that you would use these.

Auto: There are 2 coupons for 50% off oil changes, then 50% off transmission flush, A/C service, and lots others. The trick with this section is that you have to be willing to hop around to different service stations to make it worth it.

Entertainment: BOGOS at the skating rink, Children's museum, the Bounce, bowling, and at the movie theater you can buy a drink and get a popcorn free.

SO... the book is still worth it, for us at least. There are TONS more that I didn't mention here. You can call 979-297-1200 to order your book if you decide this is a good fit for your family.

Go to Old Navy tomorrow only and snatch up flip-flops for $1. Sounds like a good way to stock up for the kids.

My Shots for Tots experience

Wonderful! I went right at 4pm and they weren't busy at all. The St. Joe's annex building is located in the strip mall with blue awnings. They had toys, books, puzzles, coloring for the kids and were playing a movie. They had juice boxes and snacks for the kids. The staff and nurses were all super nice. And it was FREE. Last year, I got a bill for my son's 4 year shots. It was $1300. I am not kidding. Did I say FREE?

I typically don't consider myself a coupon blog, because while I clip coupons, I am not an extreme couponer. I am just a wannabe. But there are lots of blogs who can tell you how to get good bang for your buck, especially at places like Walgreens and CVS. Go print a coupon for $5 off your $25 or more purchase at Walgreens. Of course, people who are good at couponing (is that a verb? spell check tells me no, I just made that word up) don't spend $25 at Walgreens. They spend like 8 cents and get enough stuff to last them a year. No kidding. Coupon is good tomorrow and Thursday.

Painting a room on the cheap

Next time you happen to be at Home Depot, ask them for their "Oops" paint before you make a purchase. Six years ago we painted my son's nursery with a can of "Oops" paint- Ralph Lauren brand for $5. People mix certain paint colors to achieve another shade and sometimes that shade doesn't come out perfect. The good "Oops" colors move quick, so make a quick decision if you see something you like. More Land's End Love

Every Saturday, Land's End puts certain items "On the Counter." This means that they are discounted overstocks. On Monday, they slash the price another 25%. On Wednesday, they slash it 25% again. Finally, on Friday, they slash it a final 25%. You never know what you may find. One time I found a women's mesh polo for $4. They are also running a sale through Monday. Use code FOURDEALS and Pin 8940 for free shipping on any size order. Two things about Land's End you need to know:

1) Their women's sizes run a little big. If you normally fluctuate between two sizes, choose the smaller one.

2) You can return your Land's End purchases to Sears and avoid the return shipping fee. Just keep all your paperwork and they will take care of you.

They got us hooked

In January the Eagle started randomly delivering the paper to our house. At first we were worried we would get charged, but we never did. While I clipped coupons, my husband enjoyed the Sports section. Then one day it didn't arrive. And we HAD to have it. So we checked out the online pricing. $133.92 annually isn't bad- but they wanted a full year's pay up front and that just hurts. So we forgot about it. On Thursday, I was walking into the gas station next to the library when a woman outside stopped me to discuss an Eagle subscription. $11.15 per month, and I could pay month to month. Then, here's the clincher. She handed me $30 cash- almost enough to pay for the first three months. Definitely a better deal than we found online. And today- Saturday- the paper showed up.

EDITED TO ADD: My friend Amy informs me that the Eagle offers subscriptions to people that are affiliated with Texas A&M for only $50 per year. That is half of what we paid even with the $30 discount. Thanks, Amy.

Strategy One: Not buying it

I am addicted to a bargain. I have learned over the years that I can end up spending more money than I would have just because "It's on sale!!" Look how much I saved. No, look how much I spent. Yikes. I have learned to put prospective "buys" into three categories.

Category One: Items we have to have. We keep a white board in our house for items that we are going to need in the upcoming year. Examples: A new suit for my husband, a jacket for my oldest son who has outgrown his old one, a new backpack for Kindergarten. These are items we can't skimp on. The best strategy with this category is to know that you need it well in advance, so when the best deal pops up, you jump on it. We don't need the jacket until November, but it is on the white board in case I find on at a garage sale, or on a clearance rack. Know the full price if the item you want so when it does go on sale, you know exactly what you are saving.

Category Two: Items we could live without, but they would enhance our life- a wish list. If there is a great bargain, we would consider buying it. Examples would be Home dec items, a digital picture frame, maybe a Wii. The strategy in this category is to only allocate a certain portion of your budget to these items. After you have met that budget, don't even glance at the item- even if it's on sale. Unless someone hands it to you for free, of course, and then you can send them to me because I like free stuff.

Category Three: Items that will end up in a garage sale in two years. This is a tricky category, because the high that you get from buying something sometimes clouds your thinking. Really evaluate that item of clothing in your hand, or that extra picture frame that you want to buy. Will it bless your home or will it be passed on within a year or two? Will you love it or are you just buying it because it's cheap?

Sometimes I weigh my purchases with the value of a coupon. If I see something I like, but don't love, for $4, I think- Would I use a $4 coupon at the grocery store? Um, yes, that's a no-brainer. Put the item down. You just saved yourself $4. No clipping required.
